Pottery Care & Use Guide

Tony Sly pottery is designed for everyday use and made to be enjoyed. Each piece is individually crafted in Raglan, intended as serveware. There are many people who have been using the same pieces for 10 or 20+ years!

We work with two different clay bodies to make our ‘Modern’ and ‘Rustic’ ranges. Both clays are produced in New Zealand. The Modern range uses a stoneware clay which is a sandy colour once fired. Modern range items are dishwasher and microwave safe.Our Rustic range is lower fired earthenware, made from a dark red terracotta clay. We recommend hand-washing Rustic pieces. 

Our pottery can tolerate gentle oven use, but we do not recommend it. Sudden temperature changes may cause cracking, especially in handmade ceramics.

Over time, crazing (fine hairline cracks in the glaze) may occur. This is a common and natural characteristic of handmade ceramics.

If a piece chips or cracks deeply, we recommend retiring it from food use — but it may still live on beautifully as a decorative item.

Embrace the character of handmade work. Slight variations in shape, glaze, and tone are natural and celebrated—no two pieces are exactly alike.
